Cass County Solid Waste Management District

ABOUT US

The Cass County Solid Waste Management District (CCSWMD) was created as a result of House Bill 1240 which was made into law in 1991. The bill mandated goals for reducing the flow of solid waste into Indiana's landfills by 35% by January 1, 1996, and 50% by January 1, 2001.

The District is governed by a board that includes, by virtue of their offices, the three Cass County Commissioners, President Jim Sailors, Ralph Anderson, and Jeff LeDonne. Also, the Mayor of the largest incorporated town (Logansport), the Honorable David Kitchell; a member of the Logansport City Council, Larry Hood; a member of the County Council appointed by that council, Phillip Rains; and a member of the governing body of the second largest incorporated town (Galveston), John Hart.

The District office is managed by its Director, Sacha Teague.

Board meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the County Commissioner's hearing room at 200 Court Park. The meetings in November and December, are held a week early due to the holidays. All of the meetings are open to the public. The CAC (the advisory board to the Solid Waste Board) meets in January, April, July, and October.

In January of 1995, the City of Logansport, Indiana began a curbside recycling program that was paid for, in part, by a grant from the Cass County SWMD. In addition, county residents have access to drop-off sites at the 4H Fairgrounds, Pioneer Elementary School in Royal Center, and the Towns of Galveston, Walton, and Twelve Mile, and 350S/50E (behind the Industrial Park). These programs include the paper, glass, plastic, cardboard, and aluminum and bi-metal (tin) cans.

The City of Logansport has contracted with Wabash Valley Waste and Recycling to provide the curbside recycling for its residents in addition to waste removal. Each residence in Logansport received one 64-gallon refuse container (tote) and one 18-gallon recycling bin. Logansport is the only community in Cass County with curbside recycling.
